One of downtown Wilmington's only venues for original music is closing.

4W5 Cafe, which has hosted original music ranging from bluegrass and blues to indie rock and electronica, will close after an invitation-only party April 2, thrown by owner Polly Koster.

Koster, 61, has been running the cafe on Fifth Street, just off Market Street, for five years.

"I'm being killed financially," Koster said.

In an attempt to keep the endearingly funky venue afloat, Koster remortgaged her house "to the hilt," borrowed from her parents, used a credit card and spent all of her savings bonds, her IRA, mutual funds, an inheritance and even her baptismal money.

Even then, it still wasn't enough.

"But I believed in it," she said. "I love the people here. They're so wonderful, but I can't go on. There's no more money."

For the City of Wilmington, Polly Koster made a difference.
Wilmington was a fun place because of Polly Koster, & 4W5 Cafe will be missed....
